Frontiers – Lausanne

An “Essential Design” approach

Frontiers is an award-winning Open Science platform and one of the largest Open Access publishers in the world. Founded in 2007, it is an expanding dynamic reality that quickly went from one magazine and a handful of employees to almost 60 magazines and 400 employees in offices spread across 6 different countries.

To adapt to this expansion, the central offices in Lausanne had to change their location, moving to a space suited to the new company dimensions. The new headquarters was designed by Mel Architecture, a studio that has known and shared the culture of Frontiers for many years. Following a vision of sustainability, the Mel Architecture project followed an “Essential Design” approach, mainly using wood and glass and building materials and furniture from Europe.

In this context of sustainability and use of European resources, Mel Architecture has chosen Amarcord and Meraviglia as the seating for the spaces.
Meraviglia is the monocoque armchair designed by Favaretto & Partners with an enveloping shape, which welcomes the body and communicates positivity at first glance. Amarcord, designed by Mirco Tezze and Air Design, is the sofa with a nostalgic style, which finds its perfect reinterpretation in the modern era.

Like the Frontiers offices, Meraviglia and Amarcord are the result of a creative process, of artisan traditions and the mix of past, present, and future. Just like the knowledge that Frontiers has been committed to spreading for years.
